In Memory of John P. Downs, Esq.
1951-2025

John Paul Downs, 73, of Newark, Delaware, passed away on March 4, 2025. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on November 1, 1951, he was the cherished son of the late John Percival Downs and Marilyn Kahler Downs.

John was a proud graduate of the University of Delaware, where he completed his undergraduate studies, before earning his Juris Doctorate degree from Widener University. Over the course of his accomplished legal career, John served as the Attorney for the City of Elkton and has been a staple of the local legal community, offering counsel on a wide array of legal matters and becoming an integral part of the town. A familiar and trusted figure, he was well-respected for his sharp legal mind and his commitment to serving the public good. John was not only a skilled attorney but also a master “networker” who forged lasting connections in both the professional and personal spheres.

John’s dedication to justice extended beyond his work with the City of Elkton. He also represented defendants in Drug Court, where he applied his legal expertise to help individuals navigate difficult situations, offering them a chance at redemption and a brighter future.
Outside of his professional life, John had a deep love for the outdoors. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and trap shooter, often spending his free time in nature. His passion for these activities allowed him to bond with family and friends, creating cherished memories that will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.

John will be deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of kindness, compassion, and service to others will never be forgotten.
In lieu of flowers, John would want you to spend your money supporting any of the local establishments in Elkton. Go grab a beer, eat some food, and get a tattoo.
